LOOKING FOR A BACKPACKER GIFT GUIDE FOR TRAVELERS?

Buying gifts for someone about to travel the world using only a backpack is tricky. They have limited room in their bags, so getting them something they’ll use frequently is essential. This packing list comes from my experience as someone who has traveled out of a backpack for extended periods (two months or more).

This list contains only the most essential and helpful things a traveling backpacker would appreciate as a gift. It’s best to check with them first to see what they need. However, packing for a backpacking trip can be pricey so these gifts will be handy for those planning a trip.

This post is a travel backpackers gift guide that covers everything from luggage, toiletries, safety, comfort, and clothing

Travel Backpackers Gift Guide: An Overview

This travel backpacking gift guide covers all the essential items including everything from luggage to technology, toiletries, safety, and gear needs. These categories start with the cheaper items before moving on to the more expensive ticket items. Many items are great for smaller gifts or stocking stuffers!

This list contains products we’ve tried, used, and loved. However, some items on the list are things that we’ve seen other backpackers have that we think would be a great gift option! We believe everything on this list is valuable and will improve their trip without adding too much weight to their luggage.

Travel Backpackers Gift Guide: 45 Thoughtful Gifts

Now that we know what kind of gift items will be in this blog post, we can dive in. The life of a backpacker is simple: bring only the essentials and keep it light. If you follow those two rules while purchasing a gift, you should be in the clear! Thoughtful travel gifts can be small yet impactful!

The goal of this gift guide is that each item should enrich the backpacker’s travel experience in one way or another. Whether through their luggage, travel organization, must-have toiletry items, or a quality piece of gear, these items will benefit your loved one meaningfully. Let’s discuss some of these gift items and why they’re worth buying for your travel companion!

Backpacks, Luggage & Storage

If your traveling friend hasn’t bought their backpack yet, this might be the best place to start! You can also gift luggage organization items to make the travel experience smooth and efficient. These storage options cover everything from backpacks to day packs, dry packs, and organization! The list goes from cheapest to most expensive.

The luggage options we’ve picked out have been tried and tested by us. Some items are things we think would benefit our luggage organization while moving from city to city. Either way, these luggage options come in handy to keep all travel belongings together, organized, and dry. Let’s dive in!

I list carabiners as a cheap and easy gift for all the travel backpackers in this guide!

Heavy Duty Lightweight Carabiner Clips

A carabiner is a small yet innovative addition to a backpack because it expands your storage space from the inside of the bag to the outside! Think about it! With a carabiner, you can pack an extra pair of shoes! I’m speaking from personal experience. I velcro my Teva sandals to them to leave extra room in my bag!

A carabiner is an affordable, low-risk gift you can give to a traveling backpacker that will not go to waste. It truly comes in handy when trying to make the most out of the limited room in a backpack!

TRIPPED 3-Pack Compression Packing Cubes

Before our year-long trip, I bought Dylan these 3-pack compression packing cubes! He loves using them and separates his clothes by his pants and shorts, shirts and long sleeves, underwear, socks, and swim trunks. Whenever we get to a hostel or Airbnb, he removes the compression cubes and grabs his clothes directly from them!

These TRIPPED compression packing cubes come in handy on the road because they use the dual-zip method. Essentially, you zip all your clothes that you can fit and then move on to the other zipper to compress the clothes. You also have the option to buy a two-pack or a six-pack in different colors.

Hanging travel clothing organizer!

Travel Luggage Organizer Hanging Shelves

This travel hanging shelf organizer isn’t something Dylan and I own, but we saw another backpacker use it and thought it would come in handy. This hanging shelf clothing organizer is collapsable so you can organize your shirts, pants, and cosmetics, and when you’re at your destination, viola, you have your mini closet accessible!

A travel hanging shelf organizer is a great travel hack because when you’re ready to head to your next destination, there is no need to repack or roll your clothing to make the most out of your limited space. You collapse the organizer, pack it in your bag, and you’re ready! The hanging organizer should fit inside any large backpack or carry-on for an easy packing experience.

Sea To Summit 5L Dry Bag

One of the most annoying things to experience when traveling is having your clothes, electronics, or other travel equipment get wet or ruined. If your travel friend will be in any situation where they’re around water and want to keep their belongings dry, this Sea to Summit Dry Bag is a great gift idea!

We’re kicking ourselves because we forgot ours at home before leaving and were reminded of this great purchase when one of our travel friends whipped it out at one of Ecuador’s tallest waterfalls (where we got soaked)! Even if they don’t plan on white water rafting often, a dry bag can double up as an extra organizing compartment in their backpacks.

One of the things I'd recommend getting in a travel backpackers gift guide is a collapsible daypack like this Sea To Summit 20L one!

Sea To Summit Ultralight 20L Daypack

Dylan and I are always grabbing our Sea To Summit Ultralight Daypack when we travel. It’s a small, compact, and collapsible backpack we use when heading out on the town for a few hours. It’s for when your pockets or a purse are insufficient, but you don’t necessarily need to bring a large backpack either.

We love it because it’s a two-for-one. It adds storage space when we need it but when traveling between cities, we can compact it into a small bag and attach it using its carabiner clip to our larger backpacks. A collapsible and lightweight daypack comes in handy for us many times a week.

Dueter 32L Unisex Daypack

For the times when you’ll need more than a small bag with no compartments, this Duetuer Daypack is my absolute favorite. This backpack has 32L of storage with many different compartments for organization and has a rainproof cover. It offers essential back support for any adventure sport or during long travel days.

The Deuter brand has high-quality products that last a very long time. The backpack is durable, comfortable, and versatile. We’ve used it hiking the Sonoran desert, crawling through small-spaced caves, and even underneath a large waterfall! Dylan and I both carry our large backpacks and an additional daypack when we travel to bring all our necessities, and this daypack works fantastic.

REI Co-op Ruckpack 40L Pack (Womens | Mens)

Last but certainly not least, we have the REI Co-op 40L Ruckpack. I’m not an REI affiliate member, so I receive no financial benefit from recommending this product, but I love it so much it feels wrong not to share it with the world! Dylan and I bought this backpack before our two-week-long European backpacking trip in 2022, and we’ve been using it for our backpacking trips ever since.

Many backpackers have different opinions on how large of a backpack to bring on their trip. Dylan and I prefer a 40L pack (with an additional daypack) because it can pass as a carry-on, it’s not super heavyweight, and you can still fit a ton in there. This backpack can convert from a backpack to a duffel bag, has a rain cover, is comfortable, has ample organizing compartments, and is very durable.

Technology

Now that we’ve covered gift ideas for luggage options, we can move on to technology items! Once again, these items are listed from cheapest to most expensive, and you’ll want to ask for your traveler’s needs before purchasing any of these items. These gift items range from cable organization and charging necessities to entertainment items. Let’s go over why travelers will benefit from these items!

Waterproof Travel Cable Organizer Pouch

Dylan and I bought a BAGSMART electronics backpack, but if we hadn’t brought all our camera equipment, a waterproof travel cable organizer pouch would have been the next purchase. I can’t tell you how irritating it can be when you’re looking for a charger when they’re all jumbled up together. It’s a mess!

This small organizer pouch is perfect for removing the hassle of messy cords. The cable organizer pouch is a great gift because you can keep all your cords and small electronics in one place. You can store your phone, computer, Kindle chargers, earbuds cases, travel and power adapters, and flash drives in one spot for easy access.

LED headlamp

LED Headlamp

A headlamp is a small yet essential gift item for a travel backpacker! I brought mine to Ecuador with me and it has come in handy many times. It’s a small item that can fit easily in a backpack and is helpful in many situations.

I’ve used it in the dorms at night when others are sleeping, being stranded on a bus overnight, and during power outages. Those last two examples are rare, but that’s my point! You never know when you’ll need it, but the times that you do, it’s a lifesaver!

High-Speed Charging Battery Pack

Sometimes when traveling, there aren’t outlets available to charge your devices. Even on buses that say they have outlets, the outlets might not work. Having a charging battery pack is a great gift idea for any traveler.

I can’t count how many times we’ve pulled out our charging battery pack on the go. We find it helpful when we’ve used our drone’s short battery life and want another go! The nice thing about this gift is that it comes in handy even when you aren’t traveling!

A universal adapter is essential for a travel backpacker and I include all the details in this gift guide

Universal Travel Adapter

A small yet sometimes overlooked packing item for international travel is a Universal Travel Adapter. Different parts of the world use different outlets, and your friend’s plug-ins may not fit in international countries! A universal travel adapter is essential to stay connected and charged during your trip.

The nice thing about this universal travel adapter is that it can convert to USA, Australia, UK, and EU outlets. It has three USB-C and two USB-A ports, allowing you to charge multiple devices simultaneously. After our Europe trip, Dylan and I plugged it into our wall to keep all our electronics charging in one place!

JBL Wireless Earbuds

If your loved ones don’t have earbuds already, they are a great companion to any trip! Whether you want to listen to music on a train, watch a movie on a flight, or need to cancel out the city noise in a hotel, wireless earbuds are a must. We enjoy the wrap-around earbuds because they are harder to lose, but that’s a personal preference!

Check Out JBL Wireless Earbuds On Amazon Here

Amazon Kindle

One of the things I wish I had bought before my year-long backpacking trip is an Amazon Kindle. Traveling out of a backpack is not very forgiving for physical books, and there is a ton of downtime during travel days when I’d enjoy pulling out a book to read. The Kindle is perfect because it’s lightweight, and you can download books straight to the device.

If your friend or loved one is a reader, this is an affordable yet meaningful travel gift. It has a glare-free design and holds 16GB of storage, and the Kindle store has millions of different titles available for purchase. Another gift to consider is a Kindle Unlimited Subscription so they have free reading for their trip!

Sam holding a GoPro when traveling

GoPro Hero 12 Black Waterproof Action Camera

If the traveler in your life likes to capture their wildest adventures, consider gifting them the GoPro Hero 12! This action camera is one of the smallest on the market, with an affordable price, and works great. It’s waterproof and durable, surviving any crazy adventure!

Dylan and I own the GoPro Hero Session (I was gifted it in high school). We bring it everywhere with us. Even though my GoPro is eight years old, it still works fantastic, and that says a lot about the design! It’s worth buying the newer version because there is better image quality around the same price point.

Toiletries & Personal Care

This list is full of small, lightweight, and affordable gifts that will benefit the traveler in your life. Many of these items have multiple uses or will help with unforeseen circumstances (like no toilet paper, for example). These are great for stocking stuffers or a travel goodie bag before the big trip!

Johnson’s Baby Powder (Travel Size)

Starting strong, you can buy this travel-size baby powder for the traveler in your life. It can help chaffing because backpacking means walking almost everywhere. It can also work as a dry shampoo when you can’t squeeze in a shower! It lasts long since it’s in powder form, so it’s a worthwhile investment!

Buy some kleenex tissues for the traveler in your life who is going on a backpacking trip. This gift guide goes over why this is a fantastic gift idea!

Kleenex On-The-Go Facial Tissues

These small Kleenex on-the-go tissues are perfect for many travel circumstances, and it’s nice to have a few before you leave. It’s the type of item that you don’t think about until you really need it. Unfortunately, this is something I learned after traveling for a week. I didn’t pack any with me, but now I always have some within reach.

Need an emergency roll of toilet paper? You’re covered! Spill something on your shirt? No worries. Need extra napkins? Just grab your Kleenex! Want to get rid of your gum? Don’t stress! The examples are endless.

Honest Hand Sanitizer

Another thing that comes in handy when traveling is having a 3oz hand sanitizer on you when you can’t wash them! It’s especially nice to have after using public transportation or before meals. You can’t go wrong with having some hand sanitizer on you!

Tide To Go Sticks

Being a backpacker means only packing essential clothing. It also means stretching out your clean clothes for as long as possible, so you don’t have to worry about laundry! Since you depend so much on the limited clothes you’ve packed as a backpacker, nothing is worse than acquiring a nasty stain!

Dylan and I only brought one Tide stick, yet it has saved us numerous times! We only wished we had packed and brought more because, after one month, it’s gone! They work fantastic and are super lightweight. We even got grease stains and bright pink out of a white shirt!

Aquafor is a must when traveling!

Aquafor Healing Ointment

Truthfully, I found it difficult to downsize my toiletry collection before we left. I enjoy using skin care products, but I could realistically only pack the essentials. Aquafor Healing Ointment has proved to be one of the most versatile toiletry items I bought because of its many uses!

Aquafor is perfect for dry skin, chapstick, and any wound, rash, or cut that needs healing. It’s great to have handy, especially when traveling through different climates. If you run out of chapstick (speaking from personal experience), Aquafor is there to save the day!

Downy Wrinkle Releaser

Traveling out of a backpack means clothes get wrinkly quickly. Unfortunately, there’s no way to avoid this. We’ve learned to accept that wrinkles are inevitable with our clothes. However, when a shirt or shorts are really wrinkled, we turn to this travel Downy Wrinkle Releaser to help. Plus, it makes our clothing smell fresh again!

 Travel Toiletry Travel Bottles

Travel toiletry bottles are always convenient to have. They save you money in the long run because you can refill them using the products you already own and use. They are especially nice if the trip is a month or shorter because usually, 3oz can get you a far way. However, after traveling for over a month, I have to buy needed products anyway and don’t need the reusable ones. If the backpacker’s trip is a month or shorter, these work great!

Sea To Summit Wilderness Wash

Sea To Summit has a wilderness wash that comes in a travel-size bottle and works as a body wash, dish soap, laundry soap, and more. You only need a small amount for it to go a long way. It’s great for emergency clothes washing in the sink, a random Airbnb stay, or a shower backup. It’s also biodegradable and does not harm the natural environment!

Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets

For backpackers who will be gone for a while, these Travelon laundry soap sheets are a great way to ensure they’ll be set for laundry while keeping things light! You put one of the leaves in the washing machine, and the soap dissolves in the water! It comes in a fifty count, so it truly is a great on-the-go lightweight laundry option. They have a fresh scent.

Sea To Summit Travel Clothesline

Dylan and I didn’t bring a travel clothesline with us, but a few other backpackers in one of the hostels we stayed at did, and we thought it was a great idea! They used it to wash their clothes themselves because they brought high-quality gear they wanted to air dry. However, it’s also a great purchase if the traveler at hand is going somewhere they’ll be swimming to hang their bathing suits and towels!

Duke Cannon Shampoo Puck

My mom bought Dylan a Duke Cannon Shampoo Puck for his birthday to take with us on our trip. At first, we weren’t super thrilled about using a bar instead of liquid, but after using it a few times, Dylan started to enjoy it! It smells fantastic, shapes to his head, and soaps up easily.

Dylan mentioned that when it’s bubbly, it does give a waxy feel, but once rinsed out his hair feels soft and clean. Shampoo pucks are a great alternative to liquid shampoo because they last longer and are generally more portable. Dylan has the fragrance Barrol Char, but Duke Cannon also offers Field Mint and Gold Rush scents.

Sea To Summit Lightweight Travel Towel

I can guarantee you that if the backpacker in your life you’re shopping for doesn’t have a lightweight travel towel, this is the gift to give them! Hostels will often charge you for towels, so gifting them a lightweight one they can take with them is a game changer. Dylan and I both have the Sea to Summit Drylite Towel, and they pack down SO nicely and are microfiber and quick drying.

 BAGSMART Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag

One of the things that I wish I would’ve indulged in before traveling is a hanging travel toiletry bag. I had one back home, but it wasn’t lightweight and compact. This BAGSMART hanging travel toiletry case is perfect because it has tons of organization space, is hanging, and takes up minimal space. It’s always better to have toiletries in one space to keep things organized!

Safety & Wellbeing

While organization, toiletries, and entertainment are great gifts, you can also give practical gifts to ensure the traveling loved one is safe. This list ranges from travel insurance, an electronic SIM card, or physical safety measures that will ensure peace of mind for everyone! Here are a few ideas to get you rolling:

 International eSIM

A great gift to give any traveler who’s heading outside of the country is international phone data! SIM cards are extra expenses that add up while traveling and could be used for excursions or other travel experiences instead! It’s a practical and helpful tool to gift any backpacker abroad.

We use Airalo, an electronic SIM (eSIM) app you can download to your phone! They offer local, regional, and 200+ country data packages. You can buy daily, weekly, or monthly data packages. One way to gift international data is by purchasing a gift card for them to use!

GRAYL GeoPress Water Purifier Waterbottle

If you’re looking for a gift for someone traveling overseas, you might consider gifting them a water filtration bottle. This gift only makes sense in some travel cases when the traveler is concerned about getting sick from tap water or if they’re going backcountry hiking where they’ll need to drink out of natural water sources. Dylan and I bought GeoPress’ because we’ll need them for our Machu Picchu hiking trek.

An image of some fo the clothing I brought with me on my backpacking trip to South America

Clothing

It’s helpful as a backpacker to bring quality material clothing and gear for durability, comfort, and efficiency. Additionally, as a backpacker, neutral clothing is great because it matches any top or bottom you bring. Clothing is often very personal, but these clothing items are safe, quality materials made for traveling.

Darn Tough Socks (Womens | Men’s)

One of the most essential articles of clothing for traveling? Socks! I know there’s a running joke that socks are the worst gifts to get on Christmas, but quality socks!? That’s a different story, especially for a traveling backpacker constantly on their feet!

Darn Tough Socks makes high-quality merino wool socks that are antimicrobial, odor-resistant, quick-drying, and lightweight. They even no-show socks that protect your ankles from the back of your shoe. They are the most comfortable socks ever, and I only wish I had brought more!

Comfort & Sleep

Last but not least, one of the things you can think about when contemplating gift options is providing your backpacker with a luxurious experience! When backpacking, you’ll sometimes find yourself in places where it’s harder to sleep, like a bright airport or noisy hotel. These are a few things that can help make those experiences a little more peaceful:

Sleep Travel Eye Mask

Dylan gifted me a silk sleep eye mask to use on flights. I’m not one to pull these out because light doesn’t bother me much, but I know many people enjoy these during their travels. The nice thing is that they’re affordable and don’t take up much space!

An inflatable travel pillow is an excellent gift for someone traveling because they’re light, small, easy to use, and comfortable during travel days. A unique travel backpacker gift is a travel blanket that doubles as a mummy sleeping bag liner!
